As America marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national holiday celebrating the life and legacy of the great civil rights leader, it’s fitting to reflect on the origins of Stevie Wonder’s iconic “Happy Birthday” song. Often called "the Black Happy Birthday song," it was written and first performed by Wonder as a heartfelt tribute to Dr. King.

Stevie Wonder’s connection to Dr. King began as a young boy when he learned of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. At 15, he was thrilled to meet Dr. King, and like so many, he was devastated by King’s assassination in 1968. Wonder attended King’s funeral and soon became a passionate advocate for honoring King’s legacy. Partnering with Rep. John Conyers, Wonder supported a bill to designate Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a national holiday.

The path was not easy. Despite opposition from figures like Sen. Jesse Helms, who sought to tarnish King’s image, and years of political resistance, Wonder persevered. Labor unions and civil rights activists added their voices, creating a groundswell of support.

In the midst of this effort, Wonder decided to write a new birthday anthem for Dr. King. Initially, he set out to record the traditional birthday song but didn’t know its melody. True to his genius, Wonder composed an entirely new song, infusing it with lyrics that celebrated King’s enduring legacy.

“Happy Birthday” became an anthem for the 15-year struggle to establish the holiday, reminding the world of King’s dream and inspiring hope. Today, it remains a powerful symbol of both Dr. King’s impact and Stevie Wonder’s dedication to justice and equality. Read The Full Story

The holiday season is often hailed as the most wonderful time of the year, filled with joy, festivities, and the spirit of giving. However, mental health professionals have long observed a concerning trend – a rise in rates of depression during this seemingly joyful season. Stressful family gatherings are identified as a prime contributor to this phenomenon. On the flip side, families who don't see each other during the holidays – due to estrangement, death, or distance – can also experience related stress. It seems that the cheerful "Ho! Ho! Ho!" might need a reality check, replaced with a more reflective "No! No! No!"

The Impact of Chronic Stress on Mental Health:
Chronic stress triggers the long-term activation of the body's stress response system, involving the production of cortisol and other stress hormones. This hormonal disruption can lead to an increased risk of various health problems. Mental health concerns, such as anxiety and depression, are among the primary consequences. However, the effects don't stop there. Chronic stress has been linked to digestive issues, weight gain, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep problems, and more.

Tips for Managing Holiday Stress:
As we navigate the holiday season, it's crucial to prioritize mental well-being. Here are some tips to help manage and alleviate holiday-related stress:

1. **Set Realistic Expectations:**
Avoid the pressure to create the perfect holiday experience. Set realistic expectations for yourself and others, understanding that imperfections are a natural part of the season.

2. **Establish Boundaries:**
Clearly communicate your boundaries with friends and family. This may involve setting limits on the number of social events or politely declining invitations when needed.

3. **Self-Care Practices:**
Prioritize self-care by engaging in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. This could include meditation, exercise, reading, or spending time in nature.

4. **Seek Support:**
Reach out to friends, family, or mental health professionals if you're feeling overwhelmed. Talking about your emotions can provide valuable support and perspective.

5. **Embrace Change:**
If family dynamics have changed due to estrangement, death, or distance, acknowledge and accept these changes. Consider creating new traditions or finding alternative ways to connect with loved ones.

6. **Gratitude Practice:**
Focus on the positive aspects of the season by practicing gratitude. Keep a gratitude journal or simply take a moment each day to reflect on the things you are thankful for.

7. **Professional Help:**
If holiday stress becomes overwhelming, don't hesitate to seek professional help. Mental health professionals can provide guidance and support tailored to your specific needs.

This holiday season, let's be mindful of the mental health challenges that many individuals face. By acknowledging the potential stressors and implementing proactive strategies, we can strive for a more balanced and joyous celebration. Remember, it's okay to say "No" when needed, prioritizing your well-being above all.

The dominant cultural and historical story has been told from the perspective of the European colonialists who landed near Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts in 1620. In this version of the Thanksgiving story, the holiday commemorates the peaceful, friendly meeting of English settlers and the Wampanoag tribe for three days of feasting and Thanksgiving in 1621. (source: NativeHope.org)

Grammy-winning R&B and soul singer D’Angelo has passed away from pancreatic cancer. The “Brown Sugar” singer-songwriter died Tuesday morning in New York City, according to sources connected to his family and former manager, Kedar Massenberg. His death marks the loss of one of the most influential and gifted artists of the neo-soul era — a musician whose artistry reshaped the sound of contemporary R&B.

Born Michael Eugene Archer in Richmond, Virginia, D’Angelo rose to fame in the mid-1990s with his critically acclaimed debut album Brown Sugar (1995). Blending smooth vocals, live instrumentation, and deeply rooted soul influences, the album produced hits like “Lady,” “Cruisin’,” and the title track “Brown Sugar.” His sound — equal parts church, funk, and hip-hop — helped define a new generation of soul music alongside artists like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, and Maxwell.

In 2000, D’Angelo released his second studio album, Voodoo, a masterpiece that cemented his legacy as a visionary. The album earned him two Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Album, and featured the timeless single “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” which became a cultural phenomenon. His live performances during this era were legendary, showcasing his raw musicianship and deep connection to Black musical traditions.

After stepping away from the public eye for several years, D’Angelo returned triumphantly in 2014 with Black Messiah, his third studio album. The project, created with his band The Vanguard, was both a musical and political statement — tackling themes of love, justice, and Black identity. It won the Grammy for Best R&B Album in 2016, and the song “Really Love” earned him Best R&B Song and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance that same year.

Throughout his career, D’Angelo collaborated with a wide range of artists, including Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Q-Tip, and Raphael Saadiq, bridging generations and genres. His influence can be heard in the work of countless musicians who followed, from modern R&B innovators to hip-hop producers who drew inspiration from his deeply soulful sound.

D’Angelo’s artistry was rooted in authenticity, spirituality, and vulnerability. His passing leaves a profound void in the world of music — but his legacy as one of the most important and transformative soul artists of his time will endure through the timeless sound he created. Read more

Indigenous Peoples’ Day, observed on the second Monday of October, is a day dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the history, culture, and resilience of Indigenous communities who have lived across the Americas for thousands of years long before European explorers arrived. The holiday serves as a time to honor the rich traditions, languages, and knowledge systems of Indigenous peoples, as well as their ongoing contributions to society, art, environmental stewardship, and governance.

The origins of Indigenous Peoples’ Day trace back to the 1970s, when Native American activists and their allies began calling for a shift away from celebrating Christopher Columbus, whose arrival in 1492 marked the beginning of centuries of colonization, displacement, and violence against Indigenous nations. Instead, advocates sought a day that acknowledges the enduring strength and sovereignty of Indigenous peoples. The movement gained momentum in the 1990s, with states, cities, and tribal nations across the U.S. officially recognizing Indigenous Peoples’ Day in place of, or alongside, Columbus Day.

In a 2023 presidential proclamation, President Joe Biden reaffirmed the importance of the day, stating that it was intended to “honor the perseverance and courage of Indigenous peoples, show our gratitude for the myriad contributions they have made to our world, and renew our commitment to respect Tribal sovereignty and self-determination.” His words underscored a growing recognition of the injustices Indigenous communities have endured and the need for reconciliation and respect for treaty rights and cultural preservation.

However, not everyone supports the change. Then former President Donald Trump criticized the movement away from Columbus Day, writing, “The Democrats did everything possible to destroy Christopher Columbus, his reputation, and all of the Italians that love him so much.” His remarks reflect the broader cultural and political debate surrounding how history is remembered and whose stories are celebrated.

Today, Indigenous Peoples’ Day stands as a powerful reminder to learn from the past and to honor the first peoples of this land. It is a call to action encouraging education, cultural appreciation, and solidarity with Indigenous nations whose heritage continues to shape the Americas.

How did Mother's Day start?

According to the Library of Congress and other sources, Anna Jarvis is credited with the campaign that led to a nationally-celebrated Mother’s Day. Jarvis's mother was known for organizing women's groups to promote health and friendship.

In the wake of her mother's death in 1905, Jarvis wanted to set aside a day to honor the sacrifices of mothers for their children. In May 1908, she organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia, according to history.com. Since then, the church has been dubbed "The International Mother's Day Shrine."

As the annual celebration gained traction, West Virginia passed a law designating the holiday in 1910 and other states followed suit. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday to be observed on the second Sunday in May.

While Jarvis succeeded in making the national holiday a reality, she would soon come to hate it.

Around 1920, Jarvis started to denounce the commercialization of the day and urged people to stop buying Mother’s Day flowers, cards and candies, History.com reports. During her campaign to stop profiteers, reports state she filed lawsuits against groups that used the name "Mother's Day."

Before she died in 1948, Jarvis is said to have disowned the holiday and had actively lobbied the government to take it off the calendar as a national holiday in America.

Although it's a profitable day for retailers, phone companies, and florists, the spirit of celebrating moms on Mother's Day is still what Jarvis intended.
